I pulled into a National Park Service kayak launch site. I looked over the waves and they were big and nasty- perfect. I was all excited until 2 park personnel tell me "You can't go out on the lake today, there's a small craft advisory on. No body's on the lake today!" I told them that these were the exact conditions I'd been waiting a month for and that I was going canoeing. We argued for awhile and eventually I found out that they didn't have the authority to stop me. So I paid my fee and went canoeing. Did about 10 miles in seas up to 4 foot and had no problems. I was cautious, of course, and avoided getting too close to rocky shorelines, stayed within 1 mile of shore, and wore my PFD and dry suit. Today was a confidence builder.
Looking over a park brochure, I realized I was only a few miles from the famous Apostle Islands. So I couldn't leave without paddling the Apostle Islands. Sunday found me out in the islands. This is some fairly big water paddling and I didn't come prepared with any camping gear or food (except for a can of peanuts and M&Ms I purchased that morning). The increasing winds in the morning kept me thinking that I may not make it back to shore that day, but the big lake calmed in the afternoon and I completed almost 30 miles and made it to 4 islands(see my route detailed in red below) with no problems.
